Raleigh is a lovely city. I fell in love with it on a short, spur of the moment visit a few years ago and immediately decided to move here. Only afterward did I learn that it is rated one of the top places to live in America, and for good reason. Raleigh is a small city, only about 300,000 people, but is part of the larger and well spread-out Triangle which barely tops 1 million all together. Everywhere one looks, there are stands of wild trees that have been left as buffer by developers, with the accompanying wildlife. To see birds and squirrels and rabbits and opossums in a city was completely foreign to me when I first came here. We have everything that a city needs, without too much crime or traffic or bad air. And it's green here! There are thunderstorms often from spring through fall. I can drive for ten minutes and be in the wild woods. I'm three hours from the ocean, and three hours from the mountains. This is hard to beat. Here are some of my favorite local links: What's going on around here? Check the news from WRAL to find out. Local and up-to-the-minute weather from a weather station about 5 miles south of me in Cardinal Grove. The North Carolina Symphony is based in Raleigh and most of its performaces are here. The Carolina Ballet Company is also here and is said to rival the finest ballets that can be found in certain locations somewhat north of here. The City of Oaks Pipe Band and its members can provide all your bagpipe needs. Join the band, or find out when they are playing so you can listen. Mmmmmmm, bagpipes. Lots of exciting things are always going on at my school, North Carolina State University. What a wonderful experience to be somewhere with so much original research and many new discoveries regularly taking place. NCSU is primarily a science and engineering school, just my cup of tea.
